Prelude
In a boundless field, Jia Baoyu retreats from the material world. Around him, the souls of the Grand View Garden’s girls appear as drifting flowers – echoes of past lives. Among them, he sees himself and Lin Daiyu as Deity Shenying and Fairy Crimson Pearl, reunited in a dance of eternal affection.
Act I
Scene I
The grandeur of the Rong Mansion returns. Young Baoyu, adored by all, meets the delicate Lin Daiyu – their souls instantly remembering a love from another life.
Scene II
Baoyu and Daiyu grow up as inseparable childhood companions. When Xue Baochai joins the family, her golden locket mirrors Baoyu’s jade, sparking quiet jealousy and sorrow in Daiyu’s heart.
Scene III
Ordered to study, Baoyu drifts into sleep, dreaming of love and duty. His sister’s rise as Imperial Concubine marks the family’s highest glory – and the beginning of its decline.
Scene IV
Baoyu and Daiyu read Romance of the West Chamber, tasting first love and its melancholy. As flowers bloom and fall, Daiyu mourns their passing – sensing her own fragile fate.
Act II
Scene I
Baoyu’s rebellion angers his father, who punishes him harshly. Moved by pity, Daiyu sends him her love through a poem and a tear-stained handkerchief.
Scene II
During Baoyu’s birthday celebration, joy turns hollow. News arrives of Imperial Concubine Yuan’s death; chaos descends on the Jia household. Baoyu loses both his precious jade – and his reason.
Scene III
To save him, the family arranges a marriage with Xue Baochai. As wedding music swells, Daiyu burns her poems in despair. Baoyu lifts his bride’s veil, realises it is not Daiyu, and flees in madness.
Epilogue
Alone once more, Baoyu walks through the endless field, surrounded by spirits of the past. He bids farewell to each soul, realising all has been a dream — yet the love within that dream will live forever.
